This scam has already affected more than 92,000 Indians this year, causing cumulative losses of Rs 120.30 crore. The gravity of the issue was underscored by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the 115th episode of his radio programme Mann Ki Baat, where he warned the nation about "Digital Arrest" scams and emphasized the need for vigilance.

In November, there have been 11 reported incidents of digital arrest scams. So far in 2024, authorities have received 12 lakh complaints related to such frauds.

Despite ongoing awareness campaigns led by central and state government agencies, law enforcement, and various organizations, the number of cases continues to climb. Fraudsters employ increasingly cunning and sophisticated tactics, making it essential for individuals to stay informed and cautious.

I have conducted a detailed case study on various instances of Digital Arrest, identifying key factors that lead victims into this trap. According to him, it is more of a psychological manipulation where fraudsters convincingly pose as officials from the Police, CBI, or other agencies, claiming their actions are legally justified. Their persuasive communication style plays a significant role in deceiving victims.

Why People Are Falling Into This Trap ?

  • Convincing Communication: Fraudsters adopt a tone and manner of speaking that mimics high-ranking officers from agencies or the police.
  • Visual Deception: They often appear in police uniforms during video calls and communicate in fluent English, adding to their credibility.

  1. Use of Official Imagery: Fraudsters uses a police image in their profile photo, often with a police or agency logo in the background, making their calls appear authentic.

  2. Police Uniform in Video Calls: During WhatsApp video calls, fraudsters appears in police uniforms, further enhancing their credibility.

  3. Use of English in Conversations: Fraudsters speak like police or government officials, incorporating English words and phrases. This creates an impression of authenticity, as many assume fraudsters wouldn't communicate in English.

  4. Pre-Recorded Calls: A new tactic involves pre-recorded calls where victims are prompted to press numbers for various options, resembling official helpline interactions. This often convinces people the call is legitimate.

  5. Knowledge of Law: Fraudsters reference legal acts and regulations during conversations, persuading victims to believe they are dealing with real police officers.

Tips to Stay Safe from Digital Arrest Scams

  1. Verify Suspicious Calls: If you receive a call claiming your parcel has been seized or that you're implicated in a money laundering case, stay calm. If you haven't sent any parcels, question the claim logically. Visit your nearest police station and let real officers handle the matter.

  2. Know the Law: Police or agencies never use video calls or WhatsApp to record statements or conduct investigations. By law, no one can arrest you without properly recording your statement through official procedures.

  3. Beware of Requests to Show Your Surroundings: If a caller asks you to rotate your camera during a video call, be cautious—they might be trying to assess your environment or identify if you're alone.

  4. Validate FIR or Warrant Information: Always cross-check any information about an FIR or warrant online or by visiting your nearest police station.

  5. No Pressure for Money Deposits: Genuine police or agency officers will never pressure you to deposit money. Even if you're involved in a case, no one can legally alter evidence or demand money to "resolve" the matter.

  6. Block Fraudsters: Immediately block the number of any suspicious caller. If they try to transfer your call to another person, avoid further communication as it’s just another tactic to deceive you.
